2024 Canadian Simmental Upgrade Table Revisions Since arriving in Canada in 1967, the Simmental breed has had an open herd-book that facilitates an upgrading process using animals of varying amounts of Simmental purity. While none of the mainstream British breed associations moved to that same process, the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) has very successfully used this process to adapt and improve Simmental and Fleckvieh genetics into cattle that today are highly sought after in the North American beef industry. No other breed of cattle in Canada has seen the recent growth that Simmental has enjoyed. Upon its formation, the CSA structured its by-laws along with an upgrade table that has seen several changes made to it over the last 56 years. Each of these were made to remain current of changing times and to better provide service to CSA members and their customers. While the original by-laws focused on upgrading from a Fullblood or Purebred male, this was later changed to recognize the Simmental female as an equal contributor in the process. However, one inequity remained which was the difference in purebred status that recognized a 7/8 female as a purebred while a 7/8 male was not. Because of that difference, the CSA upgrade table recognized certain matings differently based solely on the gender of the parent. The CSA membership approved changes to make that a part of our history that has guided the CSA to this point. Since its inception, the CSA has changed the upgrade table in its bylaws several times.

8

1970 the upgrade table was added to bylaws.

2004-06 Maternal (reverse) Upgrading was approved.

2008-09 Fullbloods were officially recognized in the upgrade table.

2013-14 Registered Sires of another breed were added to the upgrade table and upgrading beyond the fraction of the sire was approved.

2023 7/8 males recognized as Purebred and gender equality was attained in the upgrade table,

With the recent change, the genetic contribution of 7/8 males is now recognized at an equal level to 7/8 females which have been recognized as purebreds since 1970.

It is important to understand that this change in no way affects the Canadian Simmental Fullblood registry, nor does it make any changes to Fullblood status. It also does not affect genetic evaluation (EPDs). This change has been fully approved by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada and the Minister of Agriculture. It came into effect on January 1, 2024, and applies to all animals born on or after that date, it is not retroactive and will not change the status of animals born prior to that. Purebred 15/16 status will continue to be calculated and published to identify that level of purity, as well as to facilitate the process of developing a 7/8 Purebred Simmental from a recorded ¾ blood parent which cannot be done with a 7/8 Pb sire. This addresses concerns about this change possibly affecting export markets to other countries. It is very important to note that this change does not result in the Canadian Simmental upgrade table being the same as the American Simmental table which has some distinct differences, including recognizing Simmental animals at less than ½ blood status. Please consult the CSA upgrade table found at the end of our bylaws when sourcing Simmental genetics from other countries. Due diligence is required, and it is the responsibility of the importer or semen distributor to ensure the accuracy of purebred status if that is your goal. Simmental is at a very exciting point in its history of supplying quality genetics to the Canadian beef industry, and the CSA will always strive to provide the best tools we can to our membership and their customers. Wishing you all the best in the coming bull sale season, and some good early rains to get that grass coming.

Breed

IMPROVEMENT

By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association

The Road to Genetic Improvement Most members of the CSA would readily tell you that the cattle have changed over the years to fit market conditions. If you take the time to look through old photos of the breed, this is readily apparent. Through this entire time Simmental have had some relative advantages in terms of mothering ability and perhaps more importantly bringing a valued piece to the commercial industry crossbreeding puzzle. Over time, I think it is fair to say that the cattle have improved. There was a period through the 1990s and early 2000s where Simmental cattle were heavily discriminated against, however today Simmental seedstock and more importantly Simmental cross commercial cattle are viewed as a premium product in the marketplace. Just as the breed has changed, so to have the tools we use to assess, sort, and continue to breed cattle that excel. Important tools such as visual appraisal and pedigrees are key base components of selection, but they are augmented by new and ever improving tools. Learning to use and apply these tools can help breeders to further improve the breed at today’s pace of commerce. EPDs are an evolving tool. Just as trucks 100 years ago did not have power steering or air conditioning, EPD were limited due to computing power and data availability. Initially computer power only allowed us to assess basic information and strictly from the sire line perspective. Today we can run complete animal models that include genomic data and many of the relationships between traits on millions of animals. In fact, the IGS evaluation that CSA participates in evaluates over 21 million animals each week and incorporates all these technologies and a few others such as external EPD and breed effects. This allows us to accurately assess crossbred animals such as Simm-Angus, and to use available information from outside sources to improve the accuracy of prediction on outside genetics. This model is continually updated as science on the animal, mathematical and computer sides progress. The latest update to the system was deployed in late December of 2023 and included updates to breed parameters and growth and carcass models. On the computer side, updates to the mathematical process were also implemented that allows the computer system to evaluate in depth, but more quickly than ever, helping to improve the delivery of timely EPD to use for genetic selection. We are adding cruise control and 4x4 to the proverbial EPD vehicle. Work is also being done on feed intake and maternal traits such as mature cow size and heifer pregnancy. These are key areas of information for a breed with the distinction of maternal strength and feedlot capability. Perhaps the best question to ask about breed improvement is how to get involved in a productive way. If we use our truck analogy, the first and most important thing to determine is where we want to go. What is our goal and our road map to get there? Hopefully the destination is the commercial marketplace, but what aspect of that marketplace we look at can dramatically impact our choice of routes. Are we maternally focused, dual purpose, terminal or do we want to be able to sort and provide genetics for all these market segments? What type of production systems are we trying to target? Higher input or more hands off types of operations.

12

Once we know where we are going, we can more easily determine the tools or type of vehicle we want to drive to our destination. If maternal traits are important, then participating in Total Herd Enrolment, reporting breeding and mature cow weights become an easy example of relatively low-cost ways to move towards our map goal. If our customers have weaning and feedlot performance on their maps, then weighing calves and reporting weights becomes an obvious part of building our performance vehicle, but we might want to consider adding heated seats, by investing in things like carcass ultrasound or even feed intake testing. Genomics may be one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving tools in our genetic evaluation vehicle. They serve to improve accuracy of the evaluation, meaning that they provide a lot of information on individual animals at a potentially early age. In our road trip context, this can probably be thought of as being able to find the fastest route with the best road conditions. It also means that we need to have a pretty good idea where we want to go to get the best value out of the investment. One of the exciting parts of the genomic piece is that it allows us to connect our genetics with commercial industry data which is where the rubber really meets the road. The Simmental breed is dynamic and continually advancing, and so is the science and technology available to help with that advancement. For breeders, key priorities should be identifying customer needs and operational goals, which provides us with our breeding destination. Once that destination is clarified, the route and type of breeding vehicle we want to drive to get there hopefully becomes clearer. There are a lot of genetic improvement opportunities in the Simmental breed and it is worth taking a look at some of the features and programs available to assist us in that journey. •

ADVICE By Roy Lewis, DVM

+

Early in the Year Bull Sales, Semen Evaluations and Rechecking your Bulls Purebred bull sales in all breeds appear to be getting earlier and earlier in the year some even happening in December. This is months before many cattlemen are going to be use them in their breeding programs. It sometimes creates great difficulty for veterinarians getting these bulls semen evaluated ahead of time. Both sellers and buyers of these bulls may need to take this into account when it comes to getting them ready for breeding season or to be delivered.

from excessive riding or being ridden are issues. Bulls need playthings and distraction in their pen from brushes to oilers to large boulders to keep them occupied. Just like feedlot animals, overcrowding or empty bunks may lead to boredom and excessive riding. Areas where bulls can get away from each other and not get cornered in pens also help. Good bedding preventing tag and potentially scrotal frostbite can also save problems at breeding soundness times.

For some breeders that have moved their sales earlier we must consider now how old the bulls are when tested and the climatic conditions around the time the breeding evaluation is performed. You cannot move the sales date earlier and expect younger bulls that are just a year or younger to pass the soundness exam. This is why many breeders are calving later themselves and going to off-age bulls that may be eighteen months of age and will test like two-year-old bulls. Plus, at breeding season for most owners they have the breeding capacity of a two-year-old bull. One still may have the awkwardness and take a bit to get their ability to breed so it is vital with any virgin bull to observe them for the ability to breed and do a test mating if possible. This is all valuable information for helping determine breeding capacity.

Breeders with early sales (some already do this) may need to test later before delivery. Several issues are that bulls failing the test need to be replaced requiring more spares by the breeder. Bulls could only be insured for death after the sale as they have not passed a breeding soundness exam. Testing, if done just before the breeding season and if failed, is hard to find the equivalent valued bull and may be too late to go to other sales. Before these early sales breeders should have their veterinarian at least scrotal measure, palpate the testicles, and even palpate the bulls internal sex glands. This may identify problems. Seminal vasculitis, if not too advanced, may be treated and small testicles or problem testicles or bad frostbite can be pulled at that time. That way it can eliminate the obvious culls and minimize sold bulls being culled later. Even though breeders can get good at scrotal measurement I always think it is better to get the objective opinion of their veterinarian and it perhaps looks better in the purchaser’s eyes. Again, transparency and communication might be measurements on young bulls which if under a year of age could grow from 1-2 cm a month between 10 and 15 months of age. This all should be taken into account so one is comparing apples to apples when it comes to scrotal circumference and knowing the averages for the breeds. Different breeds and age written on the back of the WCABP (Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners) semen forms. All very good information to know.

A few breeders are even then picking a more appropriate time to semen test when weather is not a problem. Also marketing the younger bull from a meat and feeding perspective is a better idea. It is good if you can have a good market for the cull bulls. I think castration is hard on them the bigger they are but depending on the technique it can be safe and relatively pain free if using local freezing and NSAID’s. The beef code insists on this for a reason to any bulls over six months of age. I wish there was more of a market for intact yearling bulls or older which have failed their breeding soundness exams Banding of larger bulls eliminates the worry of bleeding, but one must make sure a multivalent clostridial vaccine containing tetanus is given. Semen retests a long time before a sale can then be given more time, as the sale is still a way off. If problems like warts, frenulum’s, hair rings or cuts on the penis are found adequate time can be given for healing and rechecking. I have always said even though the same age, testing a February bull calf in March gives on average poorer results than testing an April calf in May even though they are both 13 months of age. Much better to test any yearling at fifteen months of age as sexual maturity scrotal size has improved and towards spring sexual activity increases as well. All veterinarians would prefer if activity were increased but riding, pacing the fences, observing cycling females, although logically may help the evaluations it is fraught with other problems such as injuries of the feet and legs. Also, back or penile injuries 14

As a final note if the purchase of your bull comes with many months before being turned out most veterinarians and producers would recommend retesting to be sure nothing has happened in those months in-between. I have seen everything from testicular degeneration to frenulum’s that were missed, which can happen to warts that appeared. Also, if there is any potential illness, swelling in the sheath, tag sticking to the bottom of the testicles or anything that has you worried as a buyer or seller retest the bull. This gives peace of mind because at the end of the day the goal is getting more females pregnant in a short period of time. Have a close look at the bull’s semen evaluation and make sure they are provided at the bull sales.

HOW TO TATTOO AN ANIMAL Tattoo letters are a unique combination of three (3) or four (4) letters allotted to a person by the National Breed Association for that person’s exclusive use in identifying, tattooing, and registering animals with their association. All animals must be identified with an ear tattoo in order to be eligible for registration in the Canadian Simmental Association books as follows: • All calves born in Canada must be identified by an ear tattoo before the animal is six (6) Months of age • All imported animals must be identified by an ear tattoo using the Canadian owners tattoo letters or such other letters as may be required by the association. • An ear tattoo is a unique combination of tattoo letters, followed by a number of up to 4 digits to identify the animal, followed by a year letter. The first number in a letter cannot be a zero (0). • No two (2) animals, regardless of sex, may have the same ear tattoo within a 22-year cycle of the year letters. • The letters I, O, Q, and V are not used.

HINTS ON A SUCCESSFUL TATTOOING • As proper identification of animals is the basis for the purebred industry, this is the most important factor a breeder should consider. Animals can be turned away from shows, sales, and for export purposes because of improper, indistinct, or just plain erroneous tattoos. Placing a tattoo on an animal should be a simple matter, but it seems it causes many breeders problems mainly because not enough care is taken at the time the tattoo is applied. Read these tips over, inspect your cattle tattoos when you have a moment, evaluate your present technique, and see if you can improve on your own tattooing method. • Tools of the trade: tattoo pliers, small brush (a toothbrush works well for rubbing paste into the tattoo letters, rag for cleaning ears, alcohol as solvent to wet rag to remove wax, tube of paste ink. Don’t store the tattoo letters in a pile at the bottom of a container, the points will become bent or dull. Clean, sharp, straight needles make for good tattoos • Applying the tattoo: select a spot between the ribs, well into the ear and well away from the hairy edges of the ear. Press firmly and release, pressing the ear away from the pliers if necessary to avoid tearing the skin. Note that if the punctures made are indistinct or ripped, leave it to heal for a week and try again. Avoid hitting a rib, as this causes excess bleeding and will result in one side of the puncture being too shallow and the other side too deep, making a poor tattoo. N.B. Extremely important to thoroughly clean the dirt and wax from the ear. • Apply the ink to the ear. There are many types of ink, but paste is recommended. Colors vary, but green works best. • Don’t put the paste directly on the tattoo needles, work the paste into the punctures with the brush. If any blood appears, apply more paste, and rub it in until the bleeding stops. If the tattoo is a good one, the excess ink may be removed immediately, but usually it is left on to help minimize bleeding. • Don’t place tattoos in the hairy edges. Remember when doing calves, place the tattoo well into the ear. As the calf grows, the hairy edge works into the ear. • A good tattoo, well into the ear, away from the hairy outer edges and plainly visible is the desired result. Place the breeder letters in the top, running between the first and second ribs. • The use of a flashlight speeds up the reading of tattoos, but well placed, distinct tattoos should require no aid to read them. Don’t confuse 6s and 9s. Once you’ve placed the tattoos in the pliers, check on a piece of cardboard before placing in the ear.

YOUNG SIMMENTAL PRODUCER FINDING HER WAY IN THE

INDUSTRY BY LEE HART Danika Mayer doesn’t have a detailed life plan for the next few years, but she does know she will be involved in some degree and capacity in raising Simmental cattle. While the Eastern Ontario native was born and raised in a non-farming family, she was attracted to the agriculture industry at an early age. And it was learning about and helping to show cattle as part of a 4-H project where she developed a real attraction to Simmental cattle.

“I was helping a member of local 4-H club show cattle and the Simmental breed really caught my eye” “I was helping a member of local 4-H club show cattle and the Simmental breed really caught my eye,” says Mayer, who has a fulltime-nursing career, along with being a small but dedicated Simmental producer based at the family hobby farm, at Fournier, about one hour east of Ottawa. “There are many good beef breeds out there, and I have considered others, but over the years I have learned that Simmental has the full package — great maternal traits, excellent conformation, as well as performance.” Mayer was born at L’Orignal, ON and later the family moved to a hobby farm at Fournier. “A neighbour down the road had a riding stable and also raised other livestock,” she says. “When I was about 10 years old, my brother and I would ride our bikes to the riding stable every day in the summer. We’d help with the chores and in return we’d get free riding lessons. That was our introduction to the agriculture and my love for industry has continued to grow.” After being introduced to Simmental cattle at 4-H events, Mayer later bought her first Simmental bred heifer at a sale at Shefford, QC about seven years ago. For a while 30

she was involved in a relationship and she and her partner built a small herd of purebred Simmental cattle. Life happens and as she and that partner recently and respectfully went their separate ways, she kept three bred Simmental cows which this January were to calve out at her brother’s farm near Metcalfe, just south of Ottawa. “I’m in the process of re-organizing my life,” says Mayer. “I don’t have any specific plans, but I do hope to increase the numbers of my Simmental cattle. I know the breed will always be part of my life.” While her full time career is as a registered practical nurse at the Glengarry Memorial Hospital in nearby Alexandria, Mayer is also involved with and learning as much about the beef industry as much as possible. She currently serves on the board of the long-established Ottawa Valley Simmental Club. Serving as youth program director, her interest is to encourage involvement and help develop programs relevant to younger members. Along with promoting the Simmental breed, the club, which was established 45 years ago, organizes an annual sale — Stars of the Valley Simmental Sale — held in October, and also organizes social events for members. Mayer says she was also fortunate over the past year to be selected for and participate in the Canadian Cattle Association Young Leaders (CYL) program which has helped to increase her knowledge of the beef industry.

a plan with five objectives for Mayer to achieve through the mentorship program. Also during her involvement with the mentorship program, Mayer learned about the Canada Beef, Beef Advocacy Canada imitative. The goal of this program is to provide those who are involved in the some aspect of the Canadian beef industry, with the knowledge and tools to fully understand key aspects of the beef industry so they can share that information with consumers or anyone interested in learning more. As well she also learned about the CCA Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) program which enables certified beef cattle operations to prove to consumers and retailers that their farming operations adheres to the highest standards for food safety, animal care and environmental stewardship. As part of the mentorship program she also had opportunity to attend the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO.

The CYL is a national youth initiative of the CCA providing young people ages 18-35 with industry-specific training and mentorship opportunities. During a competition usually held at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC), a field of 24 semi-finalists is narrowed down to 16 finalists. Those finalists are matched with a mentor — a person with a solid background in the beef industry — and over the nine months of the program, they work with that mentor to learn about aspects of the Canadian beef industry. Mayer was selected as a finalist at the 2022 CBIC, and worked with a mentor through 2023, graduating from CYL this past August.

“I was interested in learning how the Canadian beef industry works as well as what opportunities there might be in the cattle industry.”

And the mentorship program also awards each finalists $2,000 to be used towards furthering their knowledge of the agriculture industry. “Your budget has to be approved, and I used mine to attend The Advancing Women in Agriculture Conference in March 2023 held in Calgary,” says Mayer. “It was an overwhelming experience to be able to meet and hear the stories of so many extremely talented and capable women who forged their careers in the agriculture industry. It was very empowering.” “Overall the mentorship program was a great learning experience,” says Mayer. “One thing I learned as I move forward in the beef industry is that I may steer more towards producing commercial cattle, partly because with an off-farm career I may not have the time to devote to the purebred side of the business. “As well, as I remember the support and mentoring I have received from others in the beef industry that’s helped me learn the industry and I’m also hoping that down the road I can be a help or mentor to others who are just starting out.”

“Some people were very specific about the area of the industry they wanted to learn more about,” she says. “Where as for myself my interest was perhaps much broader. I was interested in learning how the Canadian beef industry works as well as what opportunities there might be in the cattle industry.” Mayer was matched with mentor Sandra Vos, a sole female cow-calf operator in Brant County, west of Hamilton ON. She says their lives had some similarities. Vos is retired from a career in the health care field, and with no real farming experience she has worked hard over the years to learn the beef business and establish the 80 acre Vos Farm. “We weren’t really close geographically, but we were able to meet in person about three times over the nine months of the CYL program,” says Mayer. They developed 31

National Voice Of Cattle Producers The success of our work can often be attributed to our focus on relationships. The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) puts significant effort into investing and building relationships within our industry, the broader agricultural community, and with policymakers and influencers here at home and on the world stage, to help advance the priorities of Canadian cattle producers. The start of a new year sees CCA’s engagement with industry stakeholders ramp up with numerous meetings, conferences, and events taking place. During the pandemic we discovered new ways to connect virtually, but nothing beats the value of face-toface interactions, a simple handshake, or productive conversations over dinner or a cup of coffee. Over the course of the next few months, CCA board members and staff will be travelling across the country to attend the annual general meetings (AGM) of our provincial member associations. This is a tremendous opportunity for us to share updates on the work undertaken by CCA, answer questions from grassroots producers, and engage in meaningful discussions to better understand the concerns of producers from a regional perspective. These insights, coupled with the perspectives shared by our board members, help guide the development of policy priorities that meet the needs of producers across the country. This engagement is very timely, with our AGM just around the corner in March. Mid-January also saw a delegation from the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders (CYL) program and the Canadian Cattle Youth Council visit Denver, Colorado. This trip, planned in coordination with the Consulate General of Canada in Denver, included meetings, site visits, and networking opportunities with the goal of building alliances, advancing Canada’s advocacy priorities especially when it comes to the importance of trade between our two nations, and fostering cooperation between our industries. This year’s delegates also had the opportunity to take in the National Western Stock Show and participated in sessions at the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Mid-Winter Conference. This annual trip to Denver is an excellent opportunity for our industry’s future leaders to learn more about beef and cattle trade between Canada and the United States (U.S.) and start forging relationships with their counterparts south of the border. A special thanks goes out to the Consulate General of Canada in Denver for their work building an interesting program for our young leaders and providing funding to help support their travels. If you know of anyone who would benefit from these types of experiences, please encourage them to consider applying to the Canadian CYL program. Applications are now open for the 202425 program year. Please visit www.canadiancattleyoungleaders.ca for more details. To round out our engagement efforts in January, I had the opportunity to travel to Orlando, Florida along with Tyler Fulton, CCA Vice President and CCA staff, to participate in the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s (NCBA) convention and trade show. In the U.S., this is where the American beef industry meets annually to learn, network, and advocate. It’s the perfect venue 32

Nathan Phinney CCA President

for us to learn more about the issues facing American cattle producers; better understand the policy discussions happening in the U.S. and how they could impact our industry; and engage in bilateral and trilateral discussions on topics of mutual interest with the leadership teams of the NCBA and the Confederación Nacional de Organizaciones Ganaderas (CNOG) in Mexico. One issue that we are collectively keeping our ears to the ground on is the amended rule for the voluntary “Product of the USA” label, which is expected to be released in the next few months. CCA has worked alongside the Government of Canada to express our concerns with this proposal. Earlier last year, we submitted a formal response to the proposed amendments, but we realize that our best allies are American cattle producers who share our concerns about how the proposed amendments to this rule can negatively impact the integrated nature of the North American beef supply chain and disrupt the flow of cattle between our countries. It is through conversations with our fellow beef producers south of the border that we can find solutions to common problems. These conversations have continued with producers at state meetings held in late 2023 and in early 2024. We are monitoring this regulation and will oppose any disruptions to our integrated beef supply chain. As Parliament resumed in late January, our trade file continues to be at the forefront with Bill C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management) in the Senate. As this Private Member’s Bill moves through the Senate, CCA is steadfast in our advocacy efforts against this Bill. Outreach efforts with Senators and raising the alarm through our communications channels will continue until this Bill is defeated. These efforts will be further amplified through our partnership with like-minded organizations whose industries are trade dependent. We encourage beef producers to share personal videos explaining why trade is important to their operation and how Bill C-282 is detrimental to growth and sustainability of our industry. Please send your videos to advoacay@cattle.ca. Another key trade priority will be the Say No To A Bad Deal campaign to oppose the United Kingdom’s (UK) accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). This agreement is a bad deal for beef producers as it leaves significant non-tariff barriers in place that will prevent us from fully exporting to the UK. The Canadian beef industry will continue to oppose this deal until these barriers are resolved. Our industry depends on science and rules-based trade. We need to stand up for free and open trade principles and we are doing so by showing up and actively participating in these crucial discussions. Trade is essential to the growth and future sustainability of our industry.

CALGARY, AB – The Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) recently held their 29th Annual General Meeting in Regina, Saskatchewan during Canadian Western Agribition with over fifty members and industry stakeholders in attendance. During the meeting the CBBC membership elected new Directors Eddie Marsman, current President of the Canadian Gelbvieh Association and Andy Schuepbach, a current Director of the Canadian Hereford Association to the Board and re-elected for another term Kevin Blair, Marlin Leblanc, Rod McLeod, Scott Severtson and Shawn Wilson. They join currently serving Directors Ken Friesen, Dennis Serhienko, David Sibbald and Brett Wildman to comprise the 2023/24 CBBC Board of Directors. At their recent Board of Directors meeting, the Directors re-elected David Sibbald as Chair of the CBBC Board. David owns and operates Triple S Red Angus with his family west of Calgary and is in his fourth and final year serving as Chair. Joining David on the Executive is Shawn Wilson as 1st Vice Chair and Marlin Leblanc as 2nd Vice Chair. The Directors also elected Ken Friesen as Finance Chair with Kevin Blair and Shawn Wilson joining Ken on the Finance Committee. CBBC wants to acknowledge and sincerely thank retiring Directors Amanda (Matthews) Fileccia, Hal Nixdorff and Graham McLean for their contributions to the CBBC Board. “There is significant time and energy that Directors volunteer to CBBC in their time serving on the Board,” explains Sandy Russell, CBBC Chief Executive Officer, “and we greatly appreciate all the contributions that Amanda, Hal and Graham have provided to CBBC.”

“On behalf of the CBBC membership, I want to personally thank Amanda, Hal and Graham for their guidance, input and support that they provided to our organization while serving as Directors in recent years,” acknowledges Chair, David Sibbald. “CBBC continues to play an important role in the Canadian beef industry and I look forward to working with this new group of Directors and our CEO to continue to advance the goals of our organization.” The Canadian Beef Breeds Council works on behalf of its members to support the Canadian seedstock sector, promote Canadian beef cattle genetics both domestically and internationally, and represent the seedstock producers by advocating effective policy, meaningful market access and enhanced competitiveness.

2024 WORLD SIMMENTAL FLECKVIEH FEDERATION CONGRESS! SIMMENTAL AND FLECKVIEH BREEDERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD ARE COMING TO CANADA FOR THE 2024 WORLD SIMMENTAL CONGRESS FROM JULY 29 – AUGUST 5, 2024! The World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) meets biannually at Congresses which are held in a different country each time, and in 2024 it will be Canada’s turn to shine as we again host delegates from the WSFF’s 24 member countries. It has been 18 years since Canada last hosted the WSFF Congress. For those who attended the events in 2006 it was a great opportunity to meet breeders from around the world and across Canada for fellowship, and to engage in commerce as well as education on issues facing all those involved in the breed. Hundreds of international and Canadian Simmental enthusiasts will be coming to Alberta for the Congress where they will see firsthand how the Simmental breed has evolved and prospered in Canada. The events being planned for Calgary, Olds, and surrounding areas include cultural excursions that highlight points of interest for international guests, farm tours to Mader Ranches, Clearwater Simmentals and Anchor D Ranch to showcase the various segments of the Simmental breed. Additional Simmental breeders will join the host farms and provide our guests with more opportunities to view cattle. A world class sale will be hosted east of Olds at the Bohrson Marketing Services facility and on offer will be some of the most elite genetics ever assembled for a sale in

42

Canada. The Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) National Classic show will be held at the Olds Regional Exhibition, followed by traditional rodeo events at the Strathmore Stampede for those wanting to enhance their Western Canadian cultural experience. A highlight event will be the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Banquet & Auction, which will be held in Olds during the Congress, and it promises to be the largest and best ever! Along with conducting the business of the WSFF with its members and regular meetings, there will be technical sessions which will feature presentations from some of the leading beef researchers from

to many countries around the world because Canadian Simmental cattle have developed a reputation for their great quality and broad base of genetics. The 2024 Congress guarantees to be an excellent opportunity for Simmental producers from around the world to come and see Canadian Simmental cattle for themselves.

around the world. The YCSA National show promises to be the largest ever held in Canada and will be a great display of some of the most progressive youth in Canada’s beef seedstock community. We welcome youth from other breeds to join us for this exciting event. There is already strong interest from the UK, USA, Europe, Mexico, Africa, Australia, and Central and South America about attending the Congress. We are confident that this will be an event to remember, as well one of the largest ever held in Canada. We are proud of our breed’s history in this country, and this is our chance to display how Simmental has become an important part of the Canadian beef industry. Our Simmental genetics have been exported

Canadian Simmental Association Vice President, Jennie Mutch, is chairing the WSFF Congress organizing committee, which is comprised of several dedicated volunteers who have been directly involved in the organizing of the Congress to this point. Sub-committees are continuing to evolve to manage sponsorship, volunteers, entertainment and show and display venues. If you are interested in volunteering for any of these, please contact Jennie. Registration will open March 1st and full details can be found on the 2024 Congress website or at www.simmental.com.

Plan on joining as we host the World!
